The restored Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad was the main mosque in Kuala Lumpur until 1965, and remains a popular place of worship for the Muslims in the city.
After photostop at the River of Life to see the mosque from across the river, we walk through Jalan Masjid India to see the busy streets and businesses of the area that cater for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
From there we head to Kampung Baru, or the “New Village” in the Malay language, that was originally settled by Malay farmers in the 1890s. Though it is now entirely engulfed by the urban sprawl of Kuala Lumpur, the rhythm of village life is still palpable. You can shop in the local market filled with fresh produce, spot historical pre-war wooden traditional homes down leafy lanes, and observe places of worship, from mosques to South East Asia’s biggest Sikh temple.
Along the way, you will get to taste typical Malay tea cakes and experience a slice of “kampung” culture in the heart of the city. Food sampled on this tour is halal.
